Before the MLS, There Was a Guy

Broker Denny drops a real estate history lesson that will make you feel very, very grateful for the internet.

Denny tells the story in her own words - hit play, it is worth 2 minutes.

If you know Denny, you know she has a story for everything. And if you do not know Denny yet - our seasoned broker here at Realty ONE Group Authentic - you are about to.

I sat down with her recently and asked a question I love throwing at experienced agents: "Tell me a crazy scenario from early in your career that you look back on now and think, Oh my gosh, I cannot believe we used to do that."

She laughed. I laughed. And then she told me about the guy.

"A guy would come weekly and deliver booklets that had the listings in them."

No scrolling. No Zillow. No MLS search at 2am in your pajamas. Just a guy. A very nice guy, apparently. Who drove around to real estate offices every single week and hand-delivered printed booklets full of available listings.

And that is not even the best part. Those same booklets? They were stocked at gas stations. QuikTrips. Wherever people stopped to fuel up - they could grab a real estate booklet and browse homes the same way you would flip through a hunting magazine in a waiting room.

Now, to be fair to Denny - and she was quick to clarify this - the MLS did come along not long after. So she is not quite as old as the Stone Age. She is "seasoned." That was the word we landed on. Seasoned. And she wore it proud.

    The Takeaway

Agents today have access to real-time data, AI tools, instant syndication, 3D walkthroughs... and some people still do not follow up on their leads. Wild. Meanwhile, Denny's generation was literally waiting for a guy to drive a booklet to their office before they could even know what was on the market.

That is hustle in a completely different era. And it is why agents like Denny bring something to the table that no app can replicate - perspective, grit, and a really good sense of humor about all of it.

We have got more of these coming. Real conversations, real agents, real stories. That is what Authentic is all about.
